Brown rice flour is easy to make at home and it’s a great substitute for a gluten free option! Plus it’s budget friendly, with only 1 ingredient required.
If you’re avoiding gluten, whether it be for an intolerance, or preference, you may find it difficult to shop at the supermarket.
Always reading the labels, checking ingredients, and possible cross contamination. Especially for those with Celiac Disease, purchasing packaged goods is quite challenging.
To ease your trouble, you may want to consider brown rice flour as a great gluten free alternative to wheat flour.
It’s super easy to make, and substitutes well with many recipes at an equal ratio. It also mixes well with other flour types. So you may substitute all or partial amounts as desired.
Keep in mind though, brown rice flour is a little denser than white wheat flour. So for some baked goods, you may want to mix it with lighter flours as well.
Going to the grocery store in search of certified gluten free flour options can sometimes be overwhelming. Not to mention expensive!
Although supermarkets are getting more and more options for gluten free items, it most often comes at a higher cost.
By making this flour at home, you can save yourself a ton of money.
How to make brown rice flour
Just add your desired amount of rice to a high powered blender, like a Vitamix and process on high speed until flour consistency is reached.
I prefer making a larger batch at a time, rather than just what I need for the moment.
This way, I always have some ready to go in the pantry. It just makes life easier later, plus it keeps well in an airtight container.
I typically make around four cups worth of flour, and store the extra for future use.

Yes, brown basmati will work just fine, enjoy.

I have a question: I usually wash my rice before I cook it. I’m wondering if you pre-wash before making flour? Thanks
Rosa
Hi Nancy, although I haven’t in the past, I plan to going forward. Once washed, lay it flat on a clean dish towel to completely dry before blending.

Could i make this with a nutribullet or would i need something stronger? thanks
Rosa
I haven’t tried, but it might work. You may need to pause and start again to give your machine a small break and prevent overheating.
Kayla
Ok, thank you so much! I’ll give it a go

I normally have to rinse rice before I cook it. Do you rinse your rice and let it dry before you blend it? Or no need to rinse for flour?
Rosa
Hi Kelly, I do not rinse the rice for making flour. If you prefer to do so, you would need to be very careful to ensure it’s completely dry before making your flour. Otherwise, it will clump together, and won’t stay fresh long in your pantry.

What if you don’t have a high speed blender, will a food processor or regular blender work??
Rosa
Hi Valerie, if you have a powerful food processor, that will work.
